Tibetan Medicine Consultation – What to Expect

A Holistic Approach to Healing

Sowa Rigpa (སྲོལ་བའི་རིག་པ་), the Tibetan system of healing, is deeply holistic.

In your consultation, we look beyond symptoms to understand the full context of your life, physically, emotionally, and energetically.

For example, rather than focusing only on a painful knee, we also explore the internal and external factors that may be creating the imbalances behind it.

Identifying Your Nyepa (Constitution)

At the beginning of your consultation, we’ll determine your primary Nyepa, or constitutional type. Like the doshas in Ayurveda, Tibetan medicine recognises three main types:
  • rLung (Wind) – associated with movement, mental activity, and the nervous system
  • Tripa (Bile) – linked with heat, metabolism, and digestion
  • Badkan (Phlegm) – connected to stability, structure, and bodily fluids
  •
Understanding your individual constitution helps us identify the root causes of imbalance and choose the most appropriate treatment methods for you.

Diagnosis: Traditional Tibetan Methods

Your consultation includes a combination of diagnostic tools that have been used in Tibetan medicine for centuries:
  • Pulse reading
  • Urine analysis
  • Tongue examination
  • Visual observation
  • Targeted questions about your symptoms and lifestyle
  •
Each of these provides valuable insight into your current state of health and underlying imbalances.

Treatment: The Four Pillars of Sowa Rigpa

Treatment in Tibetan medicine is never one-size-fits-all. It draws on four interconnected arms:
  1. Herbal Medicines – individually prescribed based on your constitution and current condition
  2. Diet – guidance on what to eat (and what to avoid) to restore balance
  3. Lifestyle – daily routines and behavioural practices that support long-term healing
  4. External Therapies – such as Ku Nye massage or compresses, where appropriate

These elements work together in harmony, addressing not just symptoms, but the root causes of dis-ease.

Your Role in the Healing Process

I believe in empowering you with knowledge about your own body and constitution. Understanding your Nyepa type can help you make informed decisions that support your well-being every day.
Each treatment plan is tailored not only to your physical condition, but also to your willingness to be an active participant in your own healing journey.
